Native American drums are found beating at every Indian pow wow. The heartbeat of the Earth Mother is said to be mirrored in the sound of the drum. The pow wow is not only a social event, it also serves to connect Indians with their culture and heritage. The events at these festive get togethers are controlled by the arena master. This man makes sure that the dances and songs are kept in tempo to the beating of the drum. Many times, the drums used are hundreds of years old. The arena master also helps with judging the dancing competitions and is a respected and honored individual at any Native American pow wow.

During the 19th century, tribes were separated from one another as they were placed on reservations. Sadly, cultural heritage began to be forgotten. However, this loss was soon made up with the introduction of the Native American pow wow. Pow wows probably began in the area of the Great Plains, but the concept soon spread. Dancing is a major feature of any pow wow, as is the drum. Competitions are often held. Both men and women participate in these dances, and their costumes are spectacular.

There is absolutely nothing haphazard about an Indian pow wow. This is a very important event, and a great deal of thought and planning goes into it. The council in charge of the pow wow will sometimes begin its set up a full year before it is scheduled. The tribes that will be participating will start their own preparations once they hear from the council. The Grand Entry signals the beginning of the pow wow. Oftentimes, a prayer is intoned as well. Many pow wows are held outside, and revolve around a large circle. This is where the dancing will occur. Smaller circles are for spectators and tribal members waiting to perform.

Probably one of the memorable events at any Native American pow wow is the Fancy Dance. This is a men's dance, and features extremely bright and exotic costumes. The dancing itself is extravagant, involving leaping and spinning as well as the traditional stamping. The dancers in the Fancy Dance have large bustles that accentuate their movements. Drums are a constant companion. There are also competitions in Traditional Dance and the Grass Dance.

Native American women also have a large part to play in any pow wow. There are many dances for women only, and these are performed beautifully in the arena circle. One of the most charming dances is the Jingle Dance. The costumes of the dancers are covered with hundreds of tiny metal cones. This is considered to be a healing dance. Another beautiful dance is the Shawl Dance. All dances are accompanied by the drum.

Native American pow wows are a wonderful way for anyone to become acquainted with Indian culture. Everyone is welcome and besides the dancing, singing and beating of the drum, there is always plenty of food, native crafts, and a chance to meet tribal members. A great time is absolutely guaranteed to all who come to a pow wow.
