In today's busy society, people love spending time outside in the fresh air and sunshine. Many of us work long hours indoors so the chance of being outdoors while at home is very desirable. Homes are being built with usable space such as a patio or deck where we can find tranquility and solace. A deck or patio is an awesome place to relax as well as add extra space to our homes for entertaining friends and family. Our outdoor area need not be drab or boring but rather an expansion of our decorating tastes and likes. A beautiful way to decorate your deck or patio is to use a southwestern theme.

There are many creative ideas and artistic designs available to glean from when creating a special southwest space outdoors. A key element, if space allows, is a fire pit. This will possibly become the center focal point of your southwest space. Using a small contained fire to add a slight bit of warmth to the area as well as for toasting marshmallows or hot dogs for a fun family activity is ideal. Remember to keep the fire small and to watch children at all times for safety.

Another way to add a touch of the southwest to your deck is to add brightly colored cushions to your patio furniture. You may use your existing outdoor furniture or if you decide to purchase new, wrought iron would be a great choice. Your cushions should be in bright colors like red, gold, and green, and made of fabric that is water and mildew resistant especially if your outdoor space is not covered.

A truly fun part of any decorating project is when its time to add your own special unique accents pieces; and especially fun is choosing southwest items. You may hang tropical ceramic birds at appropriate eye catching places. And nothing says "southwest" like a string or two of hanging red chilies. Mexican pottery, mission bells and wind chimes, skulls, used cowboy ropes, horseshoes, old western boots, mounted horns and free standing rustic fountains are just a few of the items you could incorporate. When using these elements together, your outdoor southwestern space becomes a welcoming and warm part of your home. Another nice effect is to have a CD softly playing Indian flute music in the background. Citronella candles are an important part in your outdoor enjoyment, creating a warm glowing atmosphere, while at the same time, keeping away pesky mosquitoes in the evenings. Use woven baskets to hold items such as grilling tools and firewood. As you see, the list is endless of items that may be ideal to help create the perfect southwest deck or patio.

If space permits, be sure to add plant life. Plants will make the area seem warm and friendly. But be sure to take care not to add poisonous or prickly plants within the reach of small children or pets. Cactus are usually thought of when you think of the southwest. Place a few in colorful pots around the edge of your patio space as well as on your patio table. The use of proper lighting to brighten up the area after the sun goes down is important especially if you plan to entertain. Rustic wrought iron lighting would serve well and would certainly play the part of giving a southwest welcome.

Your southwest patio or deck will become a favorite part of your home and will be a place where festive memories are made and special quiet times are enjoyed for years to come.
