When you are driving your vehicle you need to practice defensive driving. The number one important skill of driving defensively is to always be prepared. Anticipate what is happening around you. If you are looking at everything on the road, you can normally sense when someone is going to pull in front of you. When you are constantly prepared for all the possible things that could happen, your chances of returning home safely become greater.
Your vehicle needs to be properly prepared before you start any journey. This means to make sure the tire pressure is right, that water and oil levels are right, that the mirrors and lights are working properly, and you have plenty of gas. Make sure you have a spare tire with plenty of air, and everything needed to change the tire. Improve your safety when you are on the road by being seen by other motorists. Other motorists are less likely to run into you if they know you are there.
Know when you are in another car's blind spot because it may pull in front of you, not even knowing you are there. Same when you are driving, always be aware of your blind spots. It is obvious that you should have your lights on when it is dark, but many advocate always driving with lights on. If you are paying attention, you will notice, when it starts getting dark, at which point drivers start turning on their lights. Another important principle is to make sure that there is plenty of space between other motorists and your vehicle. Unexpected things happen when you are driving and the more time you have to react the better.
If you are following too closely, it doesn't take more than a split second to be in an accident. You are better off staying back from the car in front of you, but watch out for other cars pulling in front of you. Always remember if the driving conditions are bad, drive a little slower, and be even more aware of the other drivers. Remember to use some common sense and think about the fact that most of the other drivers are not driving defensively. The last important tip for driving defensively is to stay calm. When you see a car being driven erratically, such as speeding up, and slowing down and weaving in and out of traffic, stay out of its way.
Don't do anything to provoke that type of driver. Slow down and let them go ahead. Even pull off the road and wait for a while if need be. There are many little things you can do to drive defensively. There are even courses to teach you what to be doing. If you feel you need something like that, check out more information by going on the internet and looking up defensive driving courses.
