Anytime you are riding a motorcycle it is important to have the proper safety equipment, such as a helmet. It is the most important, but won't do much good if it is the wrong type of helmet and doesn't fit. Think about a child riding on a motorcycle with an adult helmet, which would give no protection at all to the child's skull in the case of an accident.
A helmet isn't something that can be passed around. You need to make sure that it is the right fit, sort of like your shoes. Do you ever think about wearing shoes that belong to someone else? This is one purchase that might not be that wise to make over the Internet, unless you are able to return it. The sizes vary from manufacturer, so just because one brand fits you, the same size in another brand might not fit as well. Another important thing is to never buy a used helmet, because it won't protect you as well if it has been through an accident. When trying on helmets, have everything as much as it will be when you are riding, like if you ride wearing glasses, wear them when trying on the helmet.
The helmet needs to surround the entire head, and fit very securely. The adjustable chin straps need to fit your face so that the helmet does not fit loose at all. When you have one that you think fits just right, you should try the next size bigger and the next size smaller to make sure you have the best one. You can also get helmets that have air vents, which can give you added comfort, especially when you can open them or close them when you want. There are a variety of materials that motorcycle helmets are made out of, but the best for safety is one made from organic fiberglass that also has layers of carbon fibers. You will get additional shock absorption when you have a liner that is a system with three layers.
When you spend a lot of time on a motorcycle, the helmet you get should have a visor that is easily changed. This is important when you ride during the day, and then into the night. You need visors that offer impact resistance, and are also fog resistant. The likelihood of getting in an accident is pretty good, and there isn't much protection, so at least protect your head. A quality helmet won't be inexpensive, but it might be the best insurance policy you have ever paid for.
There are plenty of statistics showing the value of wearing a helmet. There is a 35% less chance of suffering a head injury by having a quality helmet. Painting your helmet to match your motorcycle is a nice touch. No one ever thinks they are going to get in an accident, but the stats show a lot of people do.
