Walk into any retail premises from shops to restaurants and you will no doubt see one or more point-of-sale machines - POS machines for short. These are debit or credit card machines which allow business owners to set up and use a merchant account.
They also serve as more than just a credit or debit card machine. They also act as cash registers, assuring the customer he is paying the right amount and receiving the correct change should he prefer to pay by cash.
POS machines are simple to use. The card can be swiped, the amount to be paid inputted and the sale or transaction sent for authorisation. Alternatively the account number can be typed in and following approval the customer receives and signs a receipt. In short, the use of one of these machine saves on business costs and makes the whole set up more efficient. They are also an efficient way to issue refunds and issue a daily report of all sales as transactions are completed swiftly.
The only thing that could dissuade a business owner from installing a POS machine is the cost. This has to be weighed against future cost savings and benefits of having a unit installed against staying with a more traditional cash register. But there are several options open to business people.
They can buy a new POS machine. There are also companies selling second hand devices. The other options are to rent a POS machine or lease one. The problem with renting a POS machine is that the fees will rise over time, perhaps doubling within five years. On the plus side, should your rented POS machine develop a fault, your supplier will be forced to replace it.
There may also be a concern that the rapid rate of innovation could make a POS machine obsolete in a relatively short time, making its acquisition a waste of money. That argument can be countered by the fact that customer protection is becoming paramount, so the security of the POS machine system ensures it will remain in place for quite a while yet.
On having decided to install a POS machine, the next decision to make is what type. Of course cost will be a factor as well as the needs of your business. Dial up POS machines are available that work down the phone line, but they can be slow. Depending on your inflow of customers you may wish to plump for a POS machine with a high speed connection.
