Clairaudience is a form of clairvoyance that takes the form of reception of outside signals through auditory perception, or delivered directly to the recipient in thought form. Where clairvoyance can be translated as "clear sight", clairaudience is "clear hearing." Outside any psychic or channelling definitions, the clairauditory experience can best be understood by observing a dog's ability to tune into frequencies unattainable to the human ear's normal range. The clairaudience ability is not unlike a dog-whistle test for humans. Those who are blessed (or afflicted) with this ability are said to be able to receive clear messages departed spirits, spirit guides, and other known and unknown entities.

Like clairvoyance, clairaudience is an ability all humans may possess to different degrees. The most common example of a clairauditory experience is the manifestation of a familiar human event called a "crisis of conscience". Much has been made of the "tiny voice inside" that warns the individual of the possible ramifications of a future act. This is thought to be a simple ethical question, but many endure struggles with their consciences that will include very clear messages that may be strong examples of the clairauditory experience. The argument for the modern-day presence in people's live of "spirit guides" is strongly supported here. It has also been suggested that silly, unrefined or generally unexplainable thoughts that pop into one's head each day may have to do with the mischievous side of one's spirit guides, who are directly communicating through clairaudience.

It is said that a clairauditory experience is preceded by a feeling of slight pressure on the top of the head - the area of the human body's "crown chakra" - followed by direct delivery and reception of information. In some cases, the clairauditory experience will be preceded by an olfactory sensation. This phenomenon is thought to be a form of "clairsentience" and is widely reported in cases of clairvoyant ability as well. Individuals experiencing scent-patterns preceding a psychic event have often reported the occurrence of floral patterns. For individuals, who have learned to harness or manage their gift, the incidence of a scent pattern can serve as something of an early-warning system, alerting them to the upcoming clairauditory or psychic event so that they may make adjustments to better receive the information.

It has been suggested that the mental illness of schizophrenia can afflict the individual with an overactive clairauditory ability, delivering itself to the individual in a form not unlike a malfunctioning radio. In this condition, the information is unreliable, indiscriminately delivered, and virtually ceaseless in its demands on the subject. The misdelivery of psychic information can lead to an excessively paranoid and unpredictable personality. As is well known, the condition can be controlled to an extent by medication, which can offer relief from this stressful and frightening instance of what can seem like clairaudience gone haywire. So as we have seen, clairaudience can be a blessing and a curse but will always be active in the psychic realm.
