For instance there is a dream that many victims of infidelity latch onto. The idea of why can't their marriage go back to what it was before. It is almost as if they have convinced themselves their were no problems until this point in time. In some ways it is obvious what they mean. The affair has struck a nerve and opened it raw. Their whole world has been turned upside down by the thoughtlessness of their spouse. Now it is understandable why they long for the past after an extramarital affair. No doubt they had plenty of good times together and saw each other through more than a few hardships. So why is this a fantasy? Because if things were all that wonderful before then you would not be facing this problem now. That's not to say your mate's infidelity is your fault. It is not. They bare the blame for what is now happening. But in order to survive an affair means recognizing something drove them to do what they did. There's a reason why they endangered the relationship and lied to you repeatedly about what they were doing. And keep in mind they did all of this when the marriage was exactly what it used to be. They cheated during those idealized times when things were supposedly so wonderful. It may be hard to accept but the bottom line is there is no going back after an extramarital affair. Life does not work that way. Everything good or bad moves forward. It also means that if you are going to restore your marriage after infidelity you have to acknowledge a few things. To survive an affair means accepting your spouse cheated. The marriage has changed forever and will never be the same. The second thing is you decide to stay with your spouse then you don't want the marriage to be like it used to be. You want it to be better and that includes making it cheat proof.
