One of the most popular and accepted disciplines of alternative medicine is chiropractic. Its wide acceptance can be seen in the whole of US, which can be seen in the growing number of chiropractic clinics in this country. Health insurances have also added chiropractic in their coverage. Patients who are in need of relief following an injury can get a lot of benefit from chiropractic care.

In treating physical injuries, chiropractors request the patient to be x-rayed to check on the status of his spine. This will allow the chiropractor to customize a plan exclusively for the patient. The basic treatment consisting of spinal manipulation using the hands or a noninvasive device is normally included. With manual manipulation, the practitioner will be able to reduce the pain felt by the patient and increase his range of motion. Based on their expertise and training, chiropractors use different techniques depending on the nature of the physical injury. Rest, exercise, hot and cold compress, massage and other alternative medicine may be recommended, too.

The following therapies are used by a chiropractor to correct physical imbalances in the spine that affect the nervous system.

Adjustments or manipulation performed by applying pressure with the use of the hands or a chiropractic device. People with injuries that cause the wrong positioning of the spine can get a lot of help from this therapy.

Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) makes use of electrical stimulation of specific nerves to alleviate pain and enhance mobility. It also augments the production of endorphin. This benefits patients suffering from acute or chronic pains.

Trigger Point Therapy applies pressure on the trigger points to let go of the tensions. This is given to patients who do not react to manual adjustments on the trigger points. Those who have persistent tense or spasmodic muscles will do well with this type of therapy.

Hot and Cold Therapy can be used as a combined therapy or individually. The application of heat provides relief from muscle spasms, tensed muscles by lessening the pain. The cold, on the other hand, slows circulation and alleviates soreness or inflammation. Cold is usually used as a preliminary treatment for injuries that cause swelling or inflammation while the combination of hot and cold therapy is used for injuries that causes chronic or unrelenting pain.

Various injuries like sprains, pulled muscles and joint problems can benefit from chiropractic care. Other injuries that can be treated by chiropractic include injuries incurred from sports, vehicular accidents, daily activities and work-related injuries.
