Adult learners are here to stay. Though adult education has exploded since online education became an established means of achieving a college education, adult learning has always existed, whether it was the adult going to night school or the person taking weekend classes. Adults always had a drive to continue learning and advance their careers; online learning just made attaining an education easier.
Adult learners are known to seek educational opportunities that are related to specific life changing events. Presently, specific life changing events are those events related to security. Issues related to national security and homeland security are some of the biggest life changing events experienced by this generation. Indeed, the terrorist attacks on September 11th 2001 were a national security event that changed the history of the country and certainly left an impact on individual citizens. After those attacks, protection of the country, beyond already established means, became a priority and greater homeland security began to be developed.
Naturally, there has since been an ongoing need for people with national security training. National security training encompasses areas critical to national security in general, but it also emphasizes training in homeland security. In line with the adult learners preference for seeking education that is related to life changing events, national security training can be achieved, and it can be achieved online. This means that the learner can study national security and homeland security conveniently, and he or she can be satisfied that what they are learning is of prime relevance.
National security training can be achieved completely online. The fact that education in national security and homeland security can be completed wholly online cannot be understated. It is not to be understated because online learning encompasses many characteristics that adult learners prefer. Specifically, adult learners have an affinity to multi-media and self-directed learning, and they tend to lose interest in disengaging learning activities, such as long lectures. The interests and disinterest of the adult learner nicely complement online education. Online education is designed for the self-directed learner; it generously uses media, and it does not entail impersonal lectures.
Another aspect of online learning that should not be understated and that nicely complements the adult learner is that an online degree can be earned without giving up important family and work responsibilities. Because the adult learner is already invested in a career, going back to school can be a great strategic decision since an online degree can serve to advance that career. The adult who works in the military, law enforcement, or private industry sets him or herself up for job promotion, with the possibility of new career options. Employers may have a handful of qualified promotion candidates and an online degree may be a decisive factor in who receives the advancement.
Adult learners have a specific, meaningful, investment in national security training with which to advance their careers. Whether the learner is focusing on matters related to national security or homeland security, the acts of engaging in national security training and achieving an online degree are beneficial to their career.
