The main focus for the United States since September 11th, 2001 has been on homeland security and the formerly-named "War on Terror" (i.e., the conflicts with terrorist organizations). This focus is not a new trend when it comes to strategic intelligence, but is one that has been of primary concern since the founding of this nation. The only change in recent history has been the exposure of this topic to the American public via various media outlets. Prior to this exposure, analysts and operatives toiled away in anonymity, quietly doing their job and ensuring that the citizens of this country could put their heads down on their pillow at night without a care in the world. Today this job must still be done. Regardless of whether those who threaten American lives are English, Russian or Middle Eastern, those who exist in the realm of strategic intelligence must be diligent in their duties and smarter than the enemy.

Knowledge is power, and more knowledge than your enemy is another step closer to victory. To continue the legacy of success heralded by those who've come before, a new generation of protectors must follow in their footsteps. A degree in national security studies, or similar field, can help accomplish that goal. This is the Age of Information - ever-expanding landscapes of cyber networks and media outlets with open access of free information world-wide at the touch of a button. Combating enemies from this world will require a smarter and more educated strategic intelligence analyst. Many colleges and universities are now offering programs in national security studies that will allow the next generation to obtain the information required to protect these shores.

As the world changes, so too must the tactics, techniques and procedures used to protect it be willing to alter and adapt to whatever means bring about the best results for National Security. Today even social media networks like Facebook and Twitter have become sources of Open Source Intelligence. The only way to stay on top of these trends and change will the times is the continual education of the analysts who are already in place and the integration of newly educated graduates into the field. When an analyst or student receives a degree in National Security Studies, he or she is taking the next step in the continual war for the protection of the United States. This war will be won or lost, not on a traditional battlefield like conflicts of old, but in the classroom and in the minds of students and members of the Intelligence Community. Right now the enemies of the United States are recruiting from colleges and universities worldwide searching for new ideas and new tactics. By flooding our Intelligence Community with highly educated and well experienced members, we can ensure the continued success of the variety of government agencies with whom the responsibility for the protection of the American people lays. The path towards greater national security is paved with books and papers, and is not necessarily riddled with bullets and bombshells.
