The field of protection has changed considerably over the past few decades with the increased threat of global terrorism, as well as technological advancements in the areas of social networking and the implications these advancements have upon personal safety and privacy. Individuals interested in pursuing or advancing their career in protection will be required to understand these complex changes and how to adapt the changing global atmosphere to their particular jobs. Today's personal, corporate, and federal protection employers are looking for employees that can respond to a variety of challenging situations. Therefore, a more focused education, such as additional protection training or even a protection degree, could be required to teach the next generation of individuals who will protect the United States on the frontlines in the military, law enforcement, private security, and intelligence community. This essay provides an overview of the protection field today and then illustrates the importance of protection training or a protection degree for those interested in advancing their protection skills.

Protection field

The protection field is a broad category used to describe a wide variety of careers in strategic security. Protection itself is a general term which includes careers ranging from executive or dignitary protection, infrastructure protection, threat and risk assessments, as well as both Federal and local law enforcement. Careers in intelligence and counterterrorism relate to the protection field as well, as protection requires solid intelligence skills. Furthermore, the U.S. military as a whole can be included within the protection field, as its purpose is to protect U.S citizens. Most government agencies hire individuals with backgrounds in protection for various jobs, ranging from physical protection to analysis of emerging threats.

To be successful in corporate protection or celebrity, dignitary, and high-profile corporate security, individuals need to understand how to conduct operations that will not expose the client to legal or civil liability. In addition, individuals interested in careers in protection will need to acquire an in-depth knowledge of protective security law as well as analytical and problem-solving skills necessary to navigate in the global environment. These skills are important for individuals in all aspects of the protection field. Ultimately, protection specialists need to not only know when and how to respond to an emerging threat, but also must have the ability to communicate effectively and timely with clients.

Importance of Protection Training

Advanced protection training is essential for those individuals planning to either move into or advance within the protection field. A career in protection is strenuous from both a mental and physical perspective, so equipping oneself with as many tools as possible to succeed in this field is vital. Furthermore, protection specialists in all sectors, including military, law enforcement, intelligence and private security must develop a balanced combination of "on the job" protection training and experience as well as academic training to succeed.

Many schools and training centers offer solid protection training and education. A few schools even offer specialized protection degrees. These degrees provide protection specialists with specialized academic training from control and management of threatening situations to advanced surveillance and advance work. Protection training or a protection degree can include a wide variety of courses. The following list is only a sample of a wide variety of courses in which protection specialists can enroll: WMD preparedness, Advanced Terrorism and Terrorism Theory, Surveillance, Protective Security Law, Conflict Resolution, Information and Cyber Security, White Collar Crime, Workplace Violence, Background Investigations, Intelligence Collection, and Elicitation and Debriefing.

The combination of increasing global turmoil along with rapid technological advancements has created an impetus for protection specialists to stay on the cutting edge of their field in order to be effective. Protection training and advanced protection education is an important component for one's continued success in this field.
