Automated demand response has been traditionally used to 'smooth out' supply and demand imbalance in an electric utility structure. It is used as a measure in controlling operational efficiency in an entire grid and as a way to avoid overload and failure of a system which can result to power blackouts.
It is most likely that automated demand response will have widespread adoption because of its implications in reduced energy use, financial savings, and business efficiency, which can help greatly in curtailing carbon emissions.
When electricity demand exceeds supply, an automated demand response designated in a utility industry acts as a 'peak shaving' device. There would be individual devices which are programmed to operate upon demand through reduction in capacity or through automatically switching off.
A real 'smart grid' will be able to input data from every single device within every single location. It would also be able to analyze whether or not the device is 'essential' based on the 24-hour timetable. If deemed essential, its level of importance would be determined according to a scale of critical needs.
An automated demand response would have an infinite level of control which can operate with ultimate efficiency. It can save the utility in terms of costs incurred and by eliminating disruption, thereby saving money.
It is essential that an organization should consider having its own parameters for automated demand response. It should be aimed at cutting down power usage, curtail carbon emissions and consequently reducing carbon footprint. Every organization needs to understand that it should no longer be just a passive user of electricity or any other traditional source of energy.
An ultimate automated demand response should ensure that every organization must use energy only on demand and for specific purposes. It should curtail energy use as a process requires. It should also ensure that each company will become responsible for its own efficiency rating in terms of carbon and dollars spent.
Once an automated demand response is adopted by the enterprise, it should work together with the software and utility provider, solutions and systems installed in order to rule out human error in the process. Any organization will gain from adopting these practices as its reputation shall increase being a company that implements clean production and with corporate sustainability.
Any automated demand response policy that's combined with drives for energy efficiency through each organization's processes and systems will help maximize production and minimize costs.
