As we just cannot do without our cell phone, foreign travel plans requires us to consider how we will stay in touch. Whether we are just traveling a relatively short distance, such as to the Caribbean, visiting relatives in Europe, or going to more exotic climes, connectivity is the key.

A number of major US cell service providers allow you to choose a plan with international options. Different plans are available in different price categories; they can be country specific and also be model specific. If you're looking for a cheap international cell phone, you should first consider whether you can use your existing model, carrier or plan.

It is sometimes difficult to understand the complexity existing within the cellular industry. Note that not all of the major carriers in the United States operate within the same network. The most popular and flexible network, especially from an international travel point of view is the GSM network. Phones that work within this network have a much better chance of working in foreign countries as well.

Some of the conventional carriers offer plan specific options when it comes to international usage, whilst others offer country specific plans. You should be sure to check that your existing plan covers your destination. As mentioned you must ensure that your carrier's network is fully functional in the country that you will be visiting.

Furthermore, you must ensure that your actual phone is capable of working through different wireless frequencies. For example, the frequencies of the United States are different to those used in most other continents and you will need a phone that operates in what is called "tri-band" or ideally "quad band".

In short, you will not need to purchase a cheap international cell phone if your current phone or plan fits your needs. Do be warned, however, that international calls can get very pricey in most of the conventional carriers plans.

Cheap international cell phones can be rented at convenient places in your new port of call. They can also be prearranged at a number of websites online. In this case you will receive the phone in the mail and can return it in a similar manner. Be careful, as the rental rate can quickly surpass the cost of a cheap international cell phone purchased specifically for the purpose.

Whilst you will not, of course, be able to use your existing phone number you may well find that the best option is to purchase a cheap international cell phone specific to your destination. A domestic call plan will include cheap calls and the phone itself will likely be very affordable. Always make sure that you buy from a reputable online or local merchant and don't be tempted to try and get an extra deal from someone on the street.
