We can't do without our trusty cell phone and if you are thinking about a business trip to a foreign land or a well-deserved overseas vacation you will be relying on it even more. When a long way from home it is more important than ever to keep in touch with loved ones or other important people.

You will certainly feel a lot better whilst you relax in the sun, or be more efficient during a business trip, if you are connected. You do need to conduct some research before you leave to see if your usual cell phone will work okay overseas. At this time you will need to consider whether you need to buy one of those international mobile phones.

Due to differences in technology around the world it's important to understand that not all cell phones will automatically work in every country. Consider that there are two different networks -- CDMA and GSM. The well known cell phone carriers will utilize either one or the other of these networks.

For example, within the USA, Verizon operates on a different network to AT&T. The GSM network is the most dominant, extending to three quarters of the developed world, but the CDMA network, prevalent in the United States, only covers 20% of the rest of the world. International mobile phones may be your answer if traveling abroad.

You may have a GSM phone in the United States and you may also know that this network is dominant at your intended port of call. However, frequencies may be a problem. In the United States cell phones operate on a different frequency to most of the rest of the world. Whilst your GSM phone may well work overseas, you might still have to replace its memory card.

International mobile phones are available to help you prepare for most eventualities. You can opt for a triple band phone which works on three frequencies -- 850 MHz, 900 MHz and 1900 MHz. This should be good within the United States, Europe and most major destinations. One step up from that, the quad band phone option is good for the majority of the world.

When buying international mobile phones, numerous options exist. For example, you can buy one direct from a manufacturer or you can find a willing dealer in your home city to locate the best option for you. Research the specialty suppliers available and take note of some cutting edge and emerging developments that could provide you with even more options.

You always want to keep in touch when traveling overseas and international mobile phones can provide this lifeline for you. Let's face it, who wants to use those exorbitant hotel phones and constantly worry that you may not receive an important message from your loved ones.

It can be quite disconcerting to navigate between the various network and frequency options, so the purchase of one of the international phones on the market may make sense for you.
