The constant demand for innovation within the cell industry continues apace and it seems that those companies that snooze may definitely lose. During 2008 a number of the so-called "marquee" carriers started to roll out plans citing unlimited cell service for a set fee. The customary asterisk accompanied most of these plans and consumers remained wary and skeptical about the true value of the deal.

Consumers have every right to be worried about their monthly cell phone bills and, rightly or wrongly, certain carriers have a reputation for padding these bills. Most carriers seem to want to confuse you as much as possible by trying to categorize usage and, through several tiers of analysis, present their bills in a very difficult to read format.

Whilst the carriers are all trying to be competitive in a tough marketplace, they realize that with additional competition comes additional pressure. With most of the developed world mired in a recession during 2008 and 2009 consumers are looking for lower bills whilst also seeking to ride the wave of technological development that continues to boom. Unlimited cell service is something that the consumer is starting to demand.

With an unlimited cell service plan, consumers would be able to budget for their communication needs on a month by month basis without worrying about their online bill or the receipt of that envelope at month end. The cell phone is becoming more and more of a necessity as time goes by as the 3G revolution arrives and seems to be usurped almost before it begins by phones promising "4G" or even "5G". Features and applications threaten to turn the humble cell phone into a must-have personal communications device.

The debate develops, and new hybrid carriers threaten to knock the traditional companies off their perch as the first decade of the century draws to a close. New services promise no contract, no credit check, full coverage, unlimited cell service for a flat rate inclusive of taxes. With this new wave, it appears that the all-inclusive rates will be highly affordable and have no restrictions, two things which have been mutually exclusive up until now.

As new carriers also promise 3G-plus connectivity and unlimited Internet, e-mail and data transfer within the one rate, the new era of unrestricted communication appears to have arrived. Established carriers will have to look inwards and reconfigure their operations accordingly. As always, competition will be improving the cellular industry breed.
