More than 3 billion people around the world uses GSM networks, with approximately 80% of the population covered. It is little wonder that GSM cell phones dominate the industry. This standard has been touted as the most popular way to deliver communication, information and entertainment services, globally.

GSM cell phones have only been around since the early 1990s, and are in their relative infancy when it comes to the broader sphere of communication. However, the impact cannot be underestimated. Following that GSM- inspired introduction of SMS text messaging, it is estimated that well over 1 trillion messages are exchanged each year.

With the arrival of the 3G era, GSM cell phones are set to solidify their position within the industry even more. They are now poised to become our personal entertainment and information portals and have already been dubbed as the "fourth screen", after cinema, television and the computer. A vast array of media rich content is becoming available to users through access to mobile e-mail, multiple messaging service, instant messaging, mobile gaming applications, mobile music, television and video content.

GSM cell phones also set the standard for interchangeability and flexibility, thanks to the SIM card. This card allows you to keep your personal information and valuable list of contacts should you change phones or even change carriers. It is this very flexibility that has endeared GSM cell phones to the consumer.

As the industry transitions between second-generation and third generation and beyond, there seems little to stop the GSM cell phone. Many people predict that a hybrid version of the phone, service, carrier or network will eventually result in the virtual replacement of the laptop or personal computer. People could carry around with them in their pocket their entire entertainment and productivity machine and will be connected and available constantly.

The GSM technology supports voice calls and data transfer speeds of 9.6 kB per second. It operates in different frequencies around the world - 850 MHz and 1.9 GHz in the US, and 900 MHz and 1.8 GHz in Europe. GSM cell phones are available with tri-band or quad-band access, meaning that these days your cell phone can generally be used anywhere around the world - estimated to be in the region of 220 countries.

As the western world suffers through a significant recession the consumer landscape is changing. People want to envelop all the new technologies, but they also want a good degree of flexibility. Many are starting to move away from the erstwhile business model, which involved the signing of multiple year contracts, and moving towards the emerging networks and suppliers that offer greater flexibility. For example, you can now expect unlimited calls, unlimited data, unlimited e-mail, unlimited Internet, with no restrictions and no contract required. In addition, the monthly rate for what was once considered to be a "high-end" spectrum of services is well within the reach of the average consumer.
