Consideration of Aspergers careers should begin much sooner than a typical teen starts thinking about careers. You have to consider the teaching of workplace social skills as well as the job skills themselves in the education of Aspergers children. Children with Aspergers usually have normal to high intelligence and go into careers or jobs when they are adults. In some cases, the field they enter is related to one of more of the interests they were fixated on as a child. It also provides the opportunity for the Aspergers child to manipulate words on a page and overcome their natural need to think in pictures. Be proactive about looking at Aspergers careers. Talk with guidance and career counselors to explore all possible options. Arrange to tour different careers. See about shadowing a scientist or mathematician for a day to help your teen get an idea of which type of career would be best for them. Read up on Aspergers careers in books from Amazon or other bookstores.
There are plenty of ideas as to how to begin searching for an appropriate career. There is nothing to limit an individual with Aspergers syndrome to just these areas and many have found success in other areas of employment. Pay attention to your child's strengths and weaknesses, as well as to the interest they exhibit. Encourage all of their interests, even if something does not strike you as having any employable qualities about it. You never know what your child might discover if they are left to explore their natural strengths and likes.
So in summary there are many career opportunities for young people and adults with Aspergers. Your role as a parent is to help and facilitate your child to investigate career opportunities.
