Working with your child with Aspergers teacher will be essential to your child's success. By the time your child reaches school age you will have had years of experience learning what does and doesn't work with your child. You child's teacher will be lacking this information, though the teacher will possess basic teaching knowledge and maybe even some special education background. It will be up to you to share the crucial information about what works and when, with your Aspergers child.
You will want to tell the teacher what your child's diagnosis is and their normal level of functioning. If your child has normal or above normal IQ you will want to share this with your Aspergers teacher so they will realize that your child has the ability to succeed.
Share your knowledge about visual learners, which most Aspergers children are. Most Aspergers children will not learn as effectively through auditory means or letters and words. Be sure to tell your Aspergers teacher what causes your child to have meltdowns or tantrums so these situations can be avoided altogether. In case this cannot be avoided, talk about how to diffuse these situations. If there is obsessive or compulsive behavior your child exhibits, or other things that set them apart, be sure to share this with the teacher as well. Express your willingness to be a constant resource and provide a phone number or two where you can be reached dependably.
Find out if you can attend the first couple days of class with your child or attend when things hit a rough patch. This will help the teacher to get to know your child while also helping your child to adjust to school. Maintain this teacher-parent cooperation all year with frequent communication and prompt responses to problems. This allows your Aspergers child the best chance to learn and thrive within the structure of the classroom.
Encourage your Aspergers teacher to:
1. Be consistent with rules and routines.
2. Post a classroom schedule.
3. Use clear, straightforward language.
4. Allow your child to be seated at a desk near the teacher and away from noisy or distracting parts of the classroom.
5. Monitor your students work and progress, frequently. Keep in mind that your Aspergers teacher is likely dealing with a large group of children in a mixed level of abilities. Provide as much information as you can to help your teacher understand your child. Volunteer in the classroom. Attend all the scheduled teacher conferences. Request meetings of your own, if you feel the need. Attend all special education meetings such as IEP or other appointments.
I hope these helpful hints will help you to work closer with your child's teacher for the future. Because thsi relationship is such an important one in helping your child with Aspergers to succeed in the school environment.
