These days, people are spending a growing amount of time on their feet - walking, running, working, playing and more. As all age groups of the world's population become more physically active, so does the increasing need for experienced podiatrists and expert foot care become more and more important to maintaining a level of comfort, happiness and well being in a healthy lifestyle.
A very common health issue most everyone suffers in our daily lives is foot pain. With longer workdays, and many jobs require people to be on their feet for a large portion of their work day, most of us will experience foot pain at one point or another in our lives. There are different types of foot pain that occurs in all places of the foot including the toes, ball, arch, instep, sole, heel, and ankle. As we age, the frequency and severity of foot pain generally increases.
The foot is an amazing and incredibly complex part of the body. It supports our human frame in most activities. A painful, unhappy foot can affect our moods, sleep, exercise, and if not cared for, foot pain can adversely affect every part of our daily lives. We do not really think about the importance of our feet and how much debilitating foot pain can affect even the simplest tasks, yet the foot's importance can be easily recognized when we cannot walk or work due to pain, or a disorder.
The human foot consists of 26 bones along with the muscles, nerves, and ligaments that help us to control our feet. The foot is designed for balance and mobility and arguably one of the most important parts of the human body. The foot is divided into three main parts : forefoot, mid foot, and hind foot. The forefoot is made up of the toes and the long bones that connect the toes to the foot, also referred to as metatarsals . The mid foot, more commonly referred to as the 'arch' of the foot, id comprised of five tarsal bones that are connected to the fore and hind foot with muscles and ligaments. The hind foot, or as most refer to it , the "heel" and consists of three joints that connect the mid foot and ankle, including the heel bone.
The 52 bones in your feet make up about one-fourth of all the bones in your body and the feet provide the base for our bodies to stand, lift, carry, run, jump- almost every thing we do in our lives involves our feet. Podiatrists, also known as Foot doctors are physicians that have become experts int he field of podiatric medicine. These foot doctors are responsible for diagnosing and treating injuries, to keep our feet- the basis for all upright activity, functioning properly, allowing us to function normally in our daily lives.
