A well proportioned and fit body is often considered to be a symbol of vitality and good health. Some people, despite a reasonable level of fitness and good health, due to localized fat deposits may still have a body with an uneven contour. Liposuction can remove stubborn areas of fat that don't respond to weight loss methods including exercise and proper diet. Liposuction, which can also improve body contours, is a body sculpting cosmetic surgery procedure that uses a vacuum device and a tube to remove fat.

The contraction of the skin, which is genetically based, is relied on by liposuction. To help in the extraction of fat, during the procedure a salt water saline solution is instilled in the fat. Within 48 hours after surgery, most patients will be able to resume normal activities. More strenuous activities will likely be resumed in two to four weeks. To fully recover from swelling, patients will likely need to wait between one and six months.

Liposuction can be performed under local anesthesia with general anesthesia or sedation depending on the extent of the surgery. The procedure will also likely be performed on an outpatient basis at a hospital or a surgery center. The patient will then return home with a compression garment that is used to reduce discomfort and swelling. Around two weeks after the procedure, patients will transition to a second stage garment that can be worn without anyone knowing under normal clothes. The scars resulting from liposuction will be minimal and they won't require sutures.

Liposuction may be right for you if you are bothered by an excess of fat deposits that are located at any part of your body of face. These areas will be unresponsive to normal diet and exercise.

There is another body contouring procedure that may help a person to help them achieve the body that they have been wanting. This procedure is known as a tummy tuck. It's different than liposuction in that it deals with extra skin, not extra fat. Abdominoplasty and body lifts, with or without the use of lipoplasty, are the most commonly performed procedures at many cosmetic surgeons' surgery centers.

A tummy tuck will remove the excess fat and skin from the lower and middle abdomen and will tighten the muscles of the abdominal wall. Many cosmetic surgeons offer different options to address various body sizes and shapes, and the overall wants and needs of their patients. Your cosmetic surgeon will determine which type of tummy tuck is best for your needs after a thorough examination.
