A person would be a good candidate for a chin enlargement if they have a receding or small chin. In comparison, this chin would look too small with the other facial features. It also may make the nose look larger than it really is. Another candidate would be someone who wishes to increase the prominence of their chin.

A chin implant is intended to give the patient a more attractive jaw line that creates a better balance between other facial features and the chin, as well as improved profile. The plastic surgery procedure is performed under sedation and general or local anesthesia and is done on an outpatient basis. An incision will be created on the inside of the lower lip or under the chin. The implant will be placed in one of those two incisions. There is an alternative method known as osteotomy in which a portion of the chin bone will be permanently positioned forward. After the procedure is completed, the patient will go home with a small pressure bandage of their chin. The discomfort that is initially felt will be easily controlled with oral medication. Tenderness, swelling, and possibly numbness will all gradually subside within a month or two after surgery.

After the surgery, you need to make sure that you are getting enough sleep. If you don't get enough sleep, your body will take a longer time with healing. Until you feel better enough to take a proper bath, you should take a sponge bath which you may or may not need assistance with. Your surgeon should tell you all about bathing once the procedure is finished. You may not feel like doing so, but you have to walk and move around after the surgery. If you don't, you make the risk of developing clots increase as well as holding fluid a lot longer. For a patient with extra oral incisions, to help prevent keloids and flatten scars, some surgeons will suggest sheeting. At first, there will be some numbness and sensitivity. This will likely only last a few weeks. Also, there could be sharp pain or burning sensations, usually accompanied by tingling, heat, prickling, etc. This will be the main effect taking place after surgery, if you give it time, it will get better and everything will fall into place.

There are additionally procedures that would enhance the result of a chin augmentation. These include, but are not limited to neck liposuction, nasal contouring, neck lift, or laser skin resurfacing. This procedure is considered cosmetic which means that it will not be covered by most insurance companies. The patient will be responsible for all fees.
