Liposuction surgery or suction assisted lipectomy will remove extra localized fat deposits which can cause localized bulges in many areas of a person's body. Through tiny incisions, cannulas or small tubes will be used to suction away the fat. Liposuction is not made to be a weight reduction procedure. It is a contouring procedure, capable of removing bulges in order to blend the outlines of the body more aesthetically. The most common areas to be affected by fat deposits that lead to localized bulges include the upper and lower abdomen, the face and neck, upper arms, inner thighs, flank areas, outer thighs, buttocks, calves, and knee area.

There are two compartments or layers of fat on a person's body. A superficial layer which will have an even thickness over most of the body, and deep compartments that exist mainly in the areas that are commonly affected by fat deposits. If you only have localized bulges of fat, but are not overweight, you likely have excess fat in the deep compartment. These deposits of fat are hereditary and will typically not respond to exercise and diet. Superficial compartment fat, on the other hand, will increase significantly with weight gain, and decrease significantly with weight loss. Lipoplasty will primarily remove deep compartment fat deposits to remove bulges.

The elasticity and quality of the overlying skin will have a major impact on the success of liposuction surgery. When fat is suctioned out in order to remove a bulge, the overlying skin must be able to shrink or contract to fit the new profile. If a person's skin is excessively loose before the procedure, the additional looseness after this procedure may be undesirable. Your cosmetic surgeon will discuss the elasticity of your skin while you have your consultation with him or her.

Although there is no absolute age at which a person's skin will become too loose for the procedure, after the age of 45 to 50, the elasticity of the skin will decrease in most patients. To be a good candidate for liposuction surgery, you should have localized deposits of fat while having elastic skin that overlays the deposits of fat. Lipoplasty is not capable of significantly reducing the weight of your body, but will provide an improved contour in the areas that are suctioned.

Risks that are common to all surgical procedures include bleeding, infection, scar tissue formation, and fluid collections will occur in a very small percent of cases. A patient's plastic surgeon will be able to give them a more detailed amount of information about these and other rare complications and risks in their written information. They will encourage that you discuss with them any concerns that you may have during your consultation.

When fat from beneath the skin is removed, the skin can become somewhat looser. The degree of this looseness will depend on the elastic qualities of your skin prior to surgery. It will also depend on the amount of fat being removed.
