Abdominoplasty surgery, also referred to as a tummy tuck surgery, is a plastic surgery procedure designed to remove the excess fat tissue, trim and tighten the the abdominal skin and tighten the muscles of the abdomen in the mid to lower abdominal region providing a trim, fit looking mid section.
For women who have had more than one pregnancy, often times experience sagging skin in the abdominal region due to the skin stretching as the belly gets larger during pregnancy. When performing this plastic surgery procedure, the plastic surgeon lifts away the sagging skin, and stretches the skin downward toward the pelvis. The surgeon will remove the excess skin, and the scar will generally rest at the "bikini line." At this time, the surgeon will also remove excess fat tissues and tighten the abdominal muscles using stitches. In many cases, the abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck procedure requires moving the position of the navel upwards to compensate for lost abdominal skin. This procedure is often performed in combination with a liposuction surgery procedure of the thighs, hips love handles to enhance the overall result.
During the surgery, The plastic surgeon begins by making a long incision that starts at one side of the hip and continues across the lower abdomen(pubic area) to the other hip in a straight line. A large part of the reason for the location of the incision used in a tummy tuck procedure is to allow the scar from the procedure to be hidden under a bathing suit, underwear and low rise pants and shorts. Next, the plastic surgeon lift away the loose skin and belly button from the abdominal wall. At this point the surgeon then utilizes stitches to tighten the muscles that provide abdominal strength. After the abdominal wall is tightened, the surgeon will also tighten thighs and buttocks, and then reattach the belly button.
Following a tummy tuck surgery procedure, the post operative scars will be significant and require a recovery and healing time of about six weeks during which strenuous activity such as sports will be prohibited by the surgeon, though the normal routine can usually be resumed in about 10 days. The scarring from the procedure will take 6 months to a year for complete healing and resolution, however the scar will not completely disappear. In most cases, an abdominoplasty procedure is normally performed on an out patient basis, and general anesthesia is used.
