If you have a nose that does not "fit" with your other facial features or that is cosmetically unattractive, you may be a good candidate for a nose job. Also known as rhinoplasty, a nose job may also be indicated for an abnormal appearance of a person's nose as a result of injury, birth defects, or disease.
The reshaping of one's nose is intended to create a more attractive nasal shape and/or make the nose better proportionate to other facial features. A nose job is most often performed as an outpatient procedure under sedation. Also a general or local anesthetic may be used.
Your cosmetic surgeon will ultimately decide which of the following techniques should be used for your specific procedure. The standard nose job is performed by the plastic surgeon creating incisions inside the nostrils. The nasal cartilage, soft tissues, and bones are then reshaped, in turn creating an improved external contour. Another rhinoplasty technique is the open rhinoplasty. This technique is frequently used for larger or more difficult noses. It involved only one external incision across the patient's columella (this is the strut between the nostrils). Cartilage, bone, and soft tissues will then be reshaped under direct vision. Tip-plasty is another technique, but it is only used if the nasal tip is abnormal. The abnormal nasal tip will be corrected either by an external (open) or standard approach. For larger nostrils, plastic surgeons may reduce them through tiny incisions by the outer base of the nostrils. They will do this with either type of nose job.
After the nasal contouring procedure is performed, the patient will typically go home with an external splint or cast in place. The nose will also usually be packed for at least twenty-four hours and sometimes up to forty-eight. The splint or cast will typically be removed after seven to ten days after the surgery. Any initial discomfort will easily be controlled with oral medication that is prescribed by your cosmetic surgeon. The majority of the bruising and swelling will subside progressively over the first two to four weeks. If any external sutures are used, they will be removed in four to six days after the surgery. Any internal sutures will dissolve naturally.
The semi-final results of a nose job procedure will be evident within the first three months. The final results will likely be evident in twelve to fourteen months. A procedure that many people will have performed at the same time as their rhinoplasty is chin augmentation. If it is breathing improvement that you need, septoplasty (deviated septum correction) may also be appropriate.
