Lower Eyelid Surgery Is For Patients With Prominent Fat Bags Of The Lower Eyelids

When a plastic surgeon performs a lower eyelid lift, patients are offered a gentle intravenous sedation from their anesthetist. This procedure can, however, be comfortably performed with only the use of local anesthetic. For any patient who has prominent fat bags under their lower eyelids and only a small amount of excess muscle or skin, the eyelid surgery can be performed with zero external sutures. Instead, an incision will be placed on the inner side of the lower eyelid and extra fat will be carefully removed. There are no sutures required for this approach, and patients are asked to use a topical eye drop for a week after to aid in the healing process.

When excess wrinkles and skin are present around the lower eyelid, the plastic surgeon may choose to use and external incision approach. With this, the incision is made just beneath the lower eyelashes. This is easily camouflaged during the healing process. Swelling and bruising are slightly more common with lower eyelid surgery, however the problems will typically resolve within a week. Regular activities may be resumed within one to two weeks.

Eyelid tightening, or lateral canthoplasty is a procedure that is often done at the same time as lower eyelid surgery in order to tighten an extremely loose lower eyelid. With this procedure, you will be aided in restoring a more youthful position to your lower eyelid in relation to the iris. Other additional procedures that can be performed include fat grafting or fat transfer to the lower eyelid region, as well as lower eyelid laser resurfacing or chemical peel. Both of these may enhance the results of a lower eyelid lift or lower blepharoplasty. Laser eyelid surgery is a technique by which the CO2 laser replaces the scalpel for meticulous incision making. Cosmetic surgeons often use the laser for this time of the procedure which will reduce bruising, bleeding, and healing time.

Most patients will complain of little or no pain with this procedure, and are typically able to return to their routine within several days to one week, depending on the extent of the surgery.
