The surgical correction of excess skin to the thighs is more commonly known as a thigh lift. Over a person's life, during normal development or more commonly with weight loss, excess skin to the thighs can develop. This will lead many women to seek correction. Your cosmetic surgeon, as a perfectionist, will take any measure necessary to make sure that your thighplasty results are the best that he or she is able to offer.

The traditional thigh lift approach involves the removal of excess skin around the thigh along it's length, which extends from the groin to the knee. To conceal the scar, the incision (where the scar will be) is placed along the inside of the thigh. Given enough time, many patients' scars will fade and blend beautifully, but occasionally the scar will remain red for months and sometimes even widen. For the typical patient, however, this potential drawback is more than worth it seeing as they can now fit normally into their clothes.

A thigh lift procedure is typically performed with general anesthesia. The procedure is most often performed as an outpatient procedure, but sometimes you may need to stay overnight.

Many patients that receive a thigh lift procedure will have another procedure performed at the same time. The most common included procedure are abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), buttocks lift, and/or liposuction. Many times, a thigh lift procedure is performed after a lower body or buttocks lift has already been performed. This is because excess skin typically involves removal in both horizontal and vertical fashion, therefore staged or separate procedures are often advised. This will save a patient both money and time since costs are usually reduced when a patient has more than one procedure combined. You can ask your plastic surgeon about your options. Each patient is different from every other and expectations will depend upon each one's different circumstances.

Most of the patients that cosmetic surgeons have dealt with feel that their thigh lift procedure was less traumatic than they had expected. Also, many patients will stop taking their pain medication a day or two post surgery. You can go home on the same day as the procedure is performed; a doctor may refer to this as an outpatient procedure. The thigh lift incisions will likely be closed using dissolvable stitches and they will be sealed with glue on the outside. This means that there will be no sutures to remove and patients will be able to shower the very next day. Drains are typically placed, but are likely to be removed the day after surgery.

Swelling will mostly be resolved within four to six weeks after the thigh lift. Follow-up visits are vital for this procedure. These will typically take place within the first week, six weeks post-op, six month post-op, and one year post-op. This will allow for your cosmetic surgeon to make sure that the short and long term progress has been up to their standards.
