The onset of wintry weather and the gloomy economic news makes the idea of heading to a sunshine destination even more attractive than usual. However, far flung locations are often expensive to get to, so it pays to look closer to home for a winter sun break.

For residents of the UK, the Canary Islands are probably the nearest places where year round sunshine can be found. Within the archipelago of seven islands, Lanzarote is the most easterly and is also known as the island with the driest climate.

The desert climate of the island is immediately apparent when visitors arrive, as the most abundant tree is the Canarian palm. In addition, the island's volcanic landscape is bare most of the year, as it is too dry to support much in the way of plant life.

However, tourists expecting the island to look rather barren are in for a pleasant surprise, as the main tourist resorts are bursting with tropical flora. In fact, the vast majority of of the villas in Lanzarote are little oases of green, with beautiful gardens for guests to enjoy.

Public spaces in the towns and villages also tend to be well planted, as the local culture has a strong horticultural interest, alongside its agricultural past. Much of this is celebrated in the works and attractions developed by island artist and architect César Manrique.

This artist´s design aesthetic has also affected the development of towns such as Puerto del Carmen, where tourist construction has been carefully limited. Instead low rise buildings are favored, with plenty of planting around the edges of hotels and complexes to soften their impact.

Many visitors to Lanzarote choose to stay in self-catering accommodation often because there is so much to see and do, so their apartments and villas tend to act merely as a base. With a wide choice of glorious beaches, totally unique tourist attractions and raw volcanic landscapes there are many things to tempt visitors away from the resorts.

The arid climate also creates the perfect conditions for many sporting activities, with cycling and running being amongst the most popular. But even for those who prefer something more sedate, the pleasure of outdoor living is undeniable.

These factors all contribute to the relaxed vibe that Lanzarote has and accounts for the reason why many tourists come back again and again. Because whilst Lanzarote may be small, it is packed with new things to discover and favorite places to visit a second time.

By Dave Talbot: Lanzarote is an ideal location for those looking for a year round warm and friendly travel destination closer to Europe and the UK. To investigate more about this stunning island visit Lanzarote1.com for information about Lanzarote villas and self catering Lanzarote apartments
