The summer season is here again only this year many people have chosen to stay at home due to the economic challenges that are being faced by all, but it is not too late to grab yourself a holiday bargain and take advantage of the many offers available.

So where do you go for that ultimate European vacation that not only combines excellent weather and fantastic beaches, but also adds the charm of local culture to make your holiday all the more memorable.

A memorable holiday usually needs several ingredients to make it the ultimate success. Great weather, a beautiful location and above all comfortable and relaxing accommodation. Fortunately, Lanzarote, in the Canary Islands, manages to combine all of these factors with ease and then some.

The island has a year round average temperature of 20º, with the summer months usually much hotter than this, but not to hot as too make it uncomfortable.

It's blessed with a warm, dry climate, where the heat is often tempered by the trade winds that blow off the Atlantic thus making it the ideal weather soak up the sunshine and to enjoy the many golden sandy beaches that can be found around the island if you prefer not to stay in one resort.

Aside from its beaches, Lanzarote also has some stunning and inspiring scenery (which has featured in many great films), comprised of hundreds of volcanoes in the south and picturesque palm covered valleys in the north. And as tourist development has been subject to rigorous controls, visitors to the island often comment that it looks and feels unspoilt.

Over recent years, the accommodation available to short term and long term holidaymakers has increased in both variety and quality. Meaning that now it is possible to hire or rent a holiday villa in Lanzarote with all mod cons at reasonable prices, including a private swimming pool, internet connection, dishwasher and not forgetting the other essentials like the barbecue, Jacuzzis and games rooms.

The southern most resort of Playa Blanca is a particular favourite with small and large family groups who enjoy self-catering holidays so you'll find an excellent and wide variety of private villas and apartments available for rent throughout the year.

Much of this accommodation is relatively new, as the town has grown rapidly in the last few years, with an eclectic mix of hotels and villas the main areas of development.

The quality of villas in Playa Blanca are of an excellent standard, as many are only a couple of years old and have been built specifically to meet the needs and demands of the modern holidaymakers and if you want to get out of your pool dream the town itself has three lovely beaches, and also boasts just on its eastern edge the Playas de Papagayo which are considered quite simply the best beaches in the Canaries.

In the resort of Puerto del Carmen, which has been the setting for thousands of holidays over the last four decades, there are several enclaves of luxury villas.

A typical example is Los Mojones, which is perched above the picturesque old harbour, and many locals would argue some of the best villas in Puerto del Carmen some of which are nestled almost secretly behind garden walls, with palm trees surrounding the pool and beautiful tropical flowers such as hibiscus adding a spectacular extra splash of colour.

But the choice doesn't stop there as the island has more than its fair share of alternative holiday villas in Lanzarote, in landscaped rural settings and in towns such as Teguise, which is the old capital of the island.

Once you decide to go to Lanzarote the only difficulty you'll probably face is which villa or resort to choose.
