Learning a new sport is always hard work and some sports also lend themselves to leisure activities as well. A typical example of this is sailing of course. Learning to sail correctly can be a challenge though which is why it is wise to embark on this type of sport with an excellent foundation for example on one of the many courses offered by the Royal Yacht Association who offer RYA courses to beginners or experts alike.

For anyone planning to learn to sail these RYA courses are very much the benchmark by which all tuition is measured. And today it is possible to take these courses and holidays in more exotic locations such as Lanzarote, a small island which is situated just off the coast of West Africa in the Canaries. Which provides ideal year round conditions thanks to the fact that the sun shines here even during winter. Making RYA sailing courses much more bearable and enjoyable.

Sailing holidays are proving popular and Lanzarote also provides lots for visitors to do and see when they are not out at sea. As this small island is big on visitor attractions, many of which were created by a well known local artist called César Manrique. who worked in tandem with the surreal volcanic terrain of the island to create Lanzarote´s six main cultural sites. The best known of which are probably the Jameos del Agua, Timanfaya National Park and the Mirador del Rio.

Manrique was born on Lanzarote in 1919 and developed a passion for the island during family holidays at Famara on the North West coast. Where he would play for hours in rocks pools, watching the reflection of the cliffs that flank the beach here in the water. All of which helped to fire his creativity - as it is till possible to detect some of these colours and textures in his paintings today.

As well as creating unique visitor attractions Manrique also battled to preserve the island from over development in the 1970´s and 1980´s.

And anyone who has visited other Spanish sun spots would have to concede that by and large he proved very successful as development in Lanzarote does not match that on other Canary Islands such as Tenerife and Gran Canaria.

Lanzarote is an outstanding holiday destination not just for sun, sea and sand but also to learn a watersport. To find out more about sailing holidays in Lanzarote or RYA courses visit ==> endeavoursailing.co.uk
