Most tourists like to spend their holidays in Lanzarote relaxing by a swimming pool or on the beach, but to many the idea of a holiday is not just simply lazing on the beach, it's a time to charge up the batteries by pursuing sporting and leisure activities in far better weather than can be experienced at home.

Lanzarote is ideally placed for the avid water sports enthusiasts as this popular Canary Island (which is located close to the African coast) enjoys mild sea temperatures and an excellent year round climate making it an ideal destination for those who like to be a little more active on the water or pursuing land based activities too.

Of all the sporting activities available on the island there is one that stands head and shoulders above the rest and rightly so as to many taking part, this event represents one of the biggest challenges and pinnacles of their sporting careers.

We are of course talking about Lanzarote´s major sporting event of the year which is the Iron Man contest. This strength sapping event is held on the island every year in May and is widely regarded as one of the toughest triathlons in the world.

Its reputation is unquestionably well deserved as competitors are asked to complete a gruelling course comprising of 3 main elements each of which would on their own be a challenge to most sports enthusiasts. The course consists of a 3km swim and then a 180km bike ride on very challenging terrain. And if that were not enough the final challenge of a full marathon in temperatures that are often in the 30´s is enough to make even the most experienced marathon runners nervous.

Cycling is also a very popular activity holiday particularly as the island's mountainous terrain, simply stunning vistas and year round fine weather make it an ideal spot for cyclists looking for some warm weather training conditions. Most of the serious cyclists may have a base here but many also stay at the La Santa sports complex in the north of the island as this enjoys a good international reputation as a high quality sports break camp for amateurs and professionals alike.

Water sports are also an integral part of the islands activity breaks both above and below the water. The conditions for diving in Lanzarote are absolutely ideal as the waters around the island offer great visibility as well a huge selection of exotic sea life. There's nothing more enjoyable than a morning dive followed by a relaxing afternoon on the beach, or for real enthusiasts it's possible to dive both in the morning and afternoon as well.

Lanzarote is also very popular with the surfing fraternity and is a favourite destination for surfers from right across Europe as the beaches and bays on the wilder and more rugged northern coastline offer ideal conditions for riders of all levels of experience.

The excellent sea and wind conditions also mean that Lanzarote is an ideal sailing destination. Sailing is a very popular leisure activity here as the two purpose built marinas at Puerto Calero and Marina Rubicon in Playa Blanca are testament to. You don't have to be a yacht owner to enjoy sailing these waters though as there are a number of locally based companies offering reasonably priced boat charters for those who may only be considering ownership and would like to have a turn at the helm.

Most sports and activities visitors tend to be independent travellers but fortunately Lanzarote has an excellent selection of accommodation from studio apartments to luxury villas to choose from. The availability of reasonably priced flights from around Europe also helps Lanzarote maintain it reputation as the ideal destination for sun, sea, sand and sport.

Lanzarote is not just a holiday sun destination, but it is also a year round sports activity destination with a wide range of sporting activities for visitors whose horizons extend beyond the sun kissed beaches.
