You may have heard about a residential reverse osmosis systems as being the "latest technology" in drinking water contaminant removal. But it isn't the "latest" anything. It has been around for decades.

Is it the type of filter you need. Well, read on to find out.

Basis For Choosing A Home Water Treatment System.

The decision to get a home water filtration system is sound. There are many nasty contaminants in our water supply and the government can only partially protect us from them.

A home water treatment device should be judged on the basis of its comparative performance and its health-contributing attributes. These are two things that a sales representative in his zealousness to sell you his water filtration system will more than likely forget.

Operational Costs

All water treatment systems have a particular lifetime, some of course, longer than others. The components of a reverse osmosis device, like its filters and membranes degrades over time and needs to be changed.

Therefore, with increasing usage, the quality of the water will get worse. Over time, you'll be consuming water that is closer to the quality of regular tap water.

How often you'll need to change the filter parts and the cost of those parts should factor into your decision as to whether this type of device is suitable.

One of the biggest drawbacks of reverse osmosis residential filters (RO) is the amount of maintenance it needs and the amount of water it wastes.

RO systems need maintenance and adequate water pressure to work effectively. For every gallon of water it produces, it wastes 2-3 gallons. Furthermore,it takes about one hour to produce that gallon.

When you add up all of this to the thousand of dollars it could cost to acquire a RO system, you are talking about a potentially very expensive proposition.

Health Attributes

If you are willing to put up with high operating costs of RO water filtration systems, you have got to pay attention to its health attributes. Read that as the type of contaminants it can remove from your tap water.

Of the four types of contaminants in drinking water, microbiological, heavy metals, organic and inorganic compounds, microbiological entities are said to be the most dangerous.

Once you ingest these contaminants via a glass of water, they have the ability to kill you quite quickly particularly if you have an immune deficiency. Many of these microbiological entities are chlorine resistant, so they don't die with municipal water chlorination.

It has long been known that reverse osmosis purifiers won't kill microbiological contaminants and if you are not carefully in changing the filters regularly, could become a breeding ground for bacteria.

Not only that, RO filters are very ineffective at removing molecularly small synthetic chemicals. These types of contaminants are perhaps the most troublesome of all contaminants because of their large number of sources they can come from.

We live in a fast developing world, and just about every industry uses these chemicals. Anyone of these industries can cause synthetic chemicals to pollute our water supply.

But you might argue thought that synthetic chemicals are found only in trace amounts in tap water. True, but think about ingesting them over a number of years every time you drink a glass of water. What would be the health implications then. Scientists have linked cancer, Alzheimer's and mental problems to these chemicals.

What You Should You Do

No residential reverse osmosis system or any other home water treatment device for that matter will remove all possible contaminants.

If you want to know which filter is best for you could get your water tested in order to find out what contaminants are plaguing your water supply. Then, get a purifier that is effective in tackling these contaminants.

Or you could make a decision as to what type of drinking water contaminants scare you the most and get a filter that is capable of removing those contaminants.

Is it chemicals in drinking water you are most concerned about? Is It bacteria in drinking water that concerns you most?

Bottom line, don't just rush out and buy any water filter. Do some research first.

If you want to drink the cleanest and purest water, you need a home water treatment system now. We research these devices and tell you which are most effective in achieving safe drinking water for your family. All this and more at http://www.best-water-filter-guide.com
