Access to safe drinking water has become a burning issue in the past decade especially in light of the discovery that drugs and rocket fuel have been discovered in the tap water of millions of Americans.

Certainly, when compared to some of the poorest countries in the world, the USA and Canada have greater tap water safety. But is our water safe enough to drink without any worries whatsoever?

Tap Water - It Won't Kill You But

True, for the most part, you won't drink a glass of water and then keel over in a few hours. But that doesn't mean that there won't be long term effects to drinking tap water.

Recent studies have found contaminants like drugs in drinking water as well as rocket fuel of all things. Other studies reveal that there has been increasing incidences of people getting sick from pathogens in the water supply.

There was a landmark probe conducted by the Associated Press, which found antidepressants, antibiotics, sex hormones and a whole lot more medications in the water supply of some 41 million people in America.

Now, even though these drugs were found only in trace amounts, scientists are particular concerned that ingesting them over time, whenever we drink a glass of water, can have a negative impact on our health.

Bottled Water - A Solution?

Many people feel that access to safe drinking water is guaranteed when they consume bottled water. Certainly, bottle water is convenient and certainly appears to be cleaner than tap.

Some bottled water goes through several purification processes that removes a wide range of contaminants. Other bottled water goes through minimal purification and has been found to be no safer than tap.

Dr. Stephen Edberg of Yale University School of Medicine's had this to say about bottle water - "No, I wouldn't argue it's safer or not safer." "Healthy is a funny definition." I wouldn't say it's healthier than tap water, I mean they both provide water." So, whilst it is true that for the most part, bottled water tastes crispier than tap water, you might just be wasting your money if you think it is always safer.

The Best Solution

For access to safe drinking water, acquire a quality water filter unit. It is capable of removing some of the most harmful drinking water contaminants in addition to making your tap water a lot tastier.

Depending on the type of water purification device you buy, you can have just chlorine and sediment removed or chlorine, sediment, chemicals and microbiological materials removed from your tap water.

The trick is to find a reputable water filter supplier but this could be easier said than done. This is because many suppliers are not honest about the contaminant removal abilities of the products they sell.

This is why it is important to acquire water filtration products only from suppliers that sell certified units. Certification tells you what contaminants a filter can remove and by how much.

Any reputable supplier will have this certification information on his website or be able to present it to you if you buy it in a shop somewhere.

Tap water safety is a serious matter, just make sure you do your due diligence before you hand over your hard earned money to a water filter supplier.
