The security systems services industry in the US includes about 5,000 companies with combined annual revenue of about $15 billion. Major companies include ADT Security Services, Monitronics, Protection One, and UTC Fire & Security. The industry is concentrated: the 50 largest companies generate about 60 percent of industry revenue as a whole. What makes this interesting is the fact that many people are still unaware of the necessity of home security and how easy it is to monitor their loved ones when they are away.

For example, in the area of Houston, there are a total of 463 actual companies, and outside entities, that specialize in security systems for the home or business. Although the widely known and accepted companies locally are ADT and Vivint INC, we believe the larger market share for these companies resides in other metro areas (Chicago, New York, Los Angeles). It should be noted that out of the 463 listings and businesses we found during a recent research report, most were not in a group inclusive to home automation, energy controls and security. In fact, most of the security systems we investigated for this report were involved in locks and closes circuit television systems, and a good portion were also ADT authorized resellers/deals, which offers even a smaller concentration of actual companies to focus on for purposes of product saturation and development, along with competitive pricing. That could potentially be huge savings for the end-consumer.

US sales of private contractual security services and home automation systems are forecasted to rise 8.9 percent annually through 2014. Guarding and alarm monitoring will remain the largest segments while pre-employment screening, systems integration and management, and consulting will grow the fastest. The residential market will outpace nonresidential uses. Home automation is said to replace the need for guarding services by 2015, when most everything in the security segment is said to be closing in on total automation, which could mean everything in your home could be controlled through your mobile phone device.

With such a wide open market at the present time, and the small amounts of online presence, it appears that this would be an opportune time to enter the internet market and social media segments in full effect, which should immediately show results due to the fact the other markets lack this infiltration. The market for home automation systems is on the incline, and looks to continue that trend as mobile computing continues to evolve.
