I bet that a lot of people who have been thinking about setting up an Internet business are now having second thoughts due to the recession. They are probably of the opinion that a recession is no time to risk starting out on a new business venture.

But, are they right?

I don't think so. Here is why.

Even in a deep recession people still have to go out and buy stuff. What happens is not that they stop shopping but that their perception of what they need or can afford is subject to change.

Or, as Confucius might have put it, "When the wind blows the grass bends."

The secret to selling on the Internet during a recession is to be aware of how people are responding to a negative economic climate and pitch your business accordingly. And the beauty of selling on the Internet is that you can do that much more swiftly and easily than you can with a bricks and mortar business.

When the economy goes into recession people start worrying about financial security. They tend to cut down on luxuries and postpone the purchase of more expensive items.

This is a climate in which people will seek out bargains. They will be more likely to buy spare parts and second hand gear. They will be on the look out for cheap, wholesome foods and home cooking will be favoured over trips to restaurants.

So, what kind of opportunities does this offer the alert and ambitious Internet marketer?

Here are a few suggestions.

1. Online auction sites such as eBay are likely to grow in popularity as people look for ways of generating income by selling their gear, or look for second hand bargains to buy online.

One Internet marketing idea might be to start your own auction site, or to set yourself up as a seller on one of the established ones. Just make sure that you are offering the kind of goods that people need at the kind of prices they would be willing to buy them for!

A third option would be to market an auction-related affiliate program such as Chris Malta's Worldwidebrands.com

2. Sell low-cost information products on your website. Offer your visitors information and advice about how to cope during a recession, how to make money during a downturn. Ideally you should research and write your own e-book, but if you do not have the time or expertise to do that, search for a good quality private label rights package, or hire a freelance writer to write the book for you.

3. Offer people advice about how to set up and succeed with an Internet business. Many people would love to try Internet marketing but are daunted by their perceptions of the risks involved and the expense. Show them how they can make money online with a relatively low budget while working from home.

4. A website dedicated to teaching people the basics of personal finance could do very well in a recessionary climate. There are millions of people out there who need good basic financial advice delivered in clear English. I am talking about basics such as managing credit cards, setting up a household budget, financial counseling and debt management.

When you think about it, a recession is a time of great opportunity; seek out opportunities to respond to people's needs and you will stand a good chance of building yourself a viable, recession-proof Internet marketing business.
