If you want to start an online business without resigning from your job there are some simple ways to move forward with your business plans despite the constraints of full-time employment. Here are some quick tips to help you get started.

1. Cut Out Inessentials

A common problem that busy people have is an inability to focus on the essential requirements of getting a new Internet business up and running. For example, a website is essential because it will act as a central hub for your online business. Traffic will be directed towards it, and it will be the platform on which you promote your products, or from which you link out to your affiliate sales pages. On the other hand, creating a beautiful design for the website might be a less important use of your time at this stage. First focus on getting a site up and getting traffic to it, then upgrade the design when you are sure your business idea has legs. This is where prioritizing becomes an essential part of your business strategy.

2. First Things First... One Thing At A Time

Multi-tasking might seem like a great idea, but people are often more productive when they focus on one thing at a time and put "first things first" (as Stephen Covey recommends in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People). One reason why multi-tasking is less effective than it seems is because while you multitask, there are "transition times" between each task in which nothing in being accomplished. Over the period of a day, week, or month, this transition time can add up to hours or days of wasted time. Another reason is that focusing on one thing at a time will always deliver a deeper level of concentration and productivity. So, doing just ONE thing at a time, and prioritizing so the most important things get done first will really help you to build an online business while holding down a full time job.

3. Automation

There are several ways to save time with your Internet business by loading up and automating tasks in one go. For example, you can schedule your blog to publish pre-written articles several hours, days, months or even years in the future. So if you have a free morning, load up your blog with six or seven posts and schedule them to be published once every few days. If you get this right you could end up with a nice "comfort zone" of articles that are "in the system" for several months ahead of where you are now.

Another key automation strategy is to use your autoresponder to its full potential. Again, you can preload it with email newsletters and send them out on scheduled days. You can also offer new subscribers some kind of educational course about their particular niche interest, and pre-load your autoresponder with a series of e-letters.

Automation is also possible for social marketing jobs such as auto-tweeting each time a blog post is published - so you could auto-publish and then auto-tweet all in a single, automatic operation.

4. Outsourcing

One thing that many people have difficulty with, especially when just starting their online business, is giving up some control to other people. Unfortunately, starting a business requires a substantial investment of time, which most people don't have if they have a full-time job. However, once you learn to delegate and outsource as much of the creation or promotion process as you can you will discover that you can get a lot more done in the limited time available.

Tasks that you can outsource would typically include article writing for your website content, or hiring a virtual assistant to help oversee the day to day operations.

Starting an online business while still holding down a regular full time job is a challenge. Nevertheless, it is a challenge that many people have faced before and overcome. The key to success is to prioritize, focus on one thing at a time, automate and outsource whenever possible to give your new online business the momentum it needs to get off the ground.
