Search engine optimization (SEO) can be quite intimidating and tedious for a lot of people, the reason why there's been a huge surge in SEO consulting firms and consultants.  Unfortunately, SEO is no exact science, which is why some SEO firms manage to convince people to spend thousands of dollars while providing only limited results.

Fortunately for you, if you know what to look for, identifying lower quality SEO consulting firms will be much easier.

This article will look at three key signs that SEO consultants may not really be up to the job.  If you come across any of these, you might want to look for a replacement fast!

Sign 1: "Guaranteed Results"

Because SEO isn't an exact science, it's impossible for anyone to guarantee results, even an SEO consultant or firm.

Promises that your website will be on the first page of Google mean that they're either talking about an Adwords campaign (which will cost you a lot of money), or they may have some fundamental misconceptions about SEO.

Understand that Google has a whole fleet of people tweaking the search engine algorithm on an almost constant basis.

In fact, Matt Cutts estimated that every year the algorithm may be modified up to 400 times - or more than once a day!

The changes are usually only slight modifications, but they could still have an affect on your website.

Sign 2: "Buying Links"

If your SEO consultant talks about buying links (which can also cost you a lot of money), it's time to move on.

Firstly, anyone and everyone can buy links. You certainly don't need a consultant to charge you extra to do it for you.

Besides, if all they do is buy links, then why do you even need them?  You need an SEO consultant, not a link broker.

It's important to have a well-rounded SEO strategy, and if your potential consultant cannot provide one, then find one who can.  There are plenty of great options out there.

Sign 3: "Talking Over You"

If an SEO consultant tries talking over you, they're proving one of two things (or both).

Firstly, they believe they're better than you, smarter than you, and assume that you'll never understand what they're talking about.  Keep in mind the fact that you're hiring them.  You're actually doing them the favor.  There's no reason for them to talk down to you; at minimum it's just very unprofessional, which says a lot about what you should expect while they are your SEO consultant.

The second possibility is that they simply don't understand SEO well enough to explain it in simple terms.  If they can't explain it, then they don't truly understand it.

Obvious warning signs include the use of black-hat SEO techniques and spamming social sites. These actions are always a guaranteed tip-off that you want to avoid these types of SEO consultants.

In conclusion, avoid SEO consultanting firms who try to guarantee results, focus primarily on buying links, and always trying to talk over you.  These three signs are a sure bet that things won't turn out in your favor.
