Mental illness, even quite mild mental health problems can be an isolating experience for anyone suffering from one unless they have a high level of support from family and friends and access to mental health support groups if they need it.
Part of the problem surrounding mental health is that even though there has been initiatives to increase public awareness of the issues, a large percentage of the general public are still ignorant and uninformed about the nature of mental illness and how devastating and frightening it can be for an individual suffering from these types of problems.
People with mental health problems often have difficulties with relationships, housing, finances, social life and work, basically every area of their lives. Sometimes just by being able to talk to other people who understand the issues and who may have suffered from these problems themselves recovery times can be quicker, quality of life can improve and the individual regains a sense of hope and the belief that they can once again take control over their lives.
Depression and these types of related disorders can affect anyone no matter who they are, where they live, their age, gender, social status or level of education. Indeed around 25 percent of the population are suffering from some kind of mental health problem at any time.
Support groups can not only help an individual to cope with their illness on a day to day basis, they can also help inform families and carers on how they can best support someone who is struggling with a problem, not only for severe mental illnesses such as Alzheimer's disease and Schizophrenia but also for different types of depression and anxiety related disorders.
