While it's always nice to have a healthy tan, there can be times when we're on holiday that we really need to get out of the sun. Here are a few things you can use to stay in the shade while appearing on-trend.

Palm Awnings

Palm awnings are particularly popular with some shops and restaurants as they protect their customers from the glaring sun. While it's important to ensure that you don't get burnt by the strong rays coming down from above, these awnings make it very easy to stay fashionable.

Of course, these awnings don't have to be just the permanent structures that protrude from a building - you make your own while lying on the beach to ensure adequate protection. If you find two or three decent sized branches then you can sick them close together into the sand so that they stand up and create a shade. Alternatively, you could balance them between a couple of objects as another effective way to block out the sun.

Kikoys

Kikoys are essentially a versatile piece of material that you can wrap around you in a variety of different ways. They are lightweight and can be hung from the shoulders to protect the neck and the back - which can be especially vulnerable to sunstroke - or even wrap it round your waist as a makeshift skirt. That latter one is probably only for women, but it does look very stylish on them and is generally considered to be a feminine garment.

Sun Hats

Sun hats can be worn by either men or women and are seen as ideal protection for the face and back of the neck. Increasingly men are finding them useful as they cover bald patches which can be incredibly vulnerable to the sun as years of being protected by hair make the scalp's skin much less weather-beaten.

Hats can come in all sorts of different shapes and sizes but the one thing they have in common is that the material is dense enough to block out the sun's rays to give some of the most vulnerable parts of your body some extra protection.

As you can see there are many different ways you can be cool and look cool tool, whether it be through dress or by finding the right semi-permanent structure to find shade under. The main thing to be aware of, however, is that
