We all like our home to reflect who we are as individuals, to showcase the best parts of our personality. When we buy our first homes there is often a lot of work that needs doing and consequently there are different levels to which we want to take things.

For some of us the DIY stops at simply putting up a few shelves and curtain rails, while others among us want to get stuck in and build an extension or knock a wall through to make extra living space. This article is a brief overview of both of the latter two approaches.

Internal Design

Internal design encompasses every change you make within the current structure - in other words you aren't creating extra space or building out into the garden. Some of the biggest jobs in internal design are when you knock an internal wall down so that two rooms become one. Possibly the most common example of people doing this is when they demolish a wall so that the living room and a dining room or kitchen become one.

However, internal design doesn't have to be quite so grandiose, with it sometimes being limited to putting in a mantelpiece, for example, or lowering a ceiling by installing a piece of fabric suspended from the four corners so that a more bohemian atmosphere is created in the living room, bedroom or den.

Sometimes internal DIY can call for a professional to be brought in, such as when the plumbing needs rearranging or if some serious work needs doing to the electronic wiring. Whatever it is you're doing, it is often worthwhile at least consulting a professional for advice if you're not 100% sure of your possibilities, otherwise you could end up doing a lot of damage to your house.

External DIY

External DIY consists of what goes on outwith the current four walls of your house. One of the most popular changes people make is if they want to add a conservatory of an extension to their current house, either to create more space in the summer or on the other hand to make more bedrooms for their children.

Of course, external DIY isn't just limited to extensions, with garden sheds, and indeed patio and decking created as well as it referring to many forms of gardening as well.

Internal or external DIY - there's always plenty to get on with when moving house. What will you start on first?
