Whatever it is that we're doing, whatever it is that we're performing, your performance will always be influenced by what is going on around us and the environment in which we are performing. Below are a few common examples of performance "arenas".

Stadium

If you're playing sport in a stadium then the chances are that you've done pretty well for yourself - otherwise why would you be performing somewhere that spectators can sit or stand to watch you. Sometimes performing in front of the large crowd that a stadium can hold can be daunting, other times it can be inspiring and it is in this very public atmosphere that we can learn so much about ourselves.

The layout of the stadium can also have an effect of how we perform, as some have running tracks around a field in the middle making the crowd less obvious, while others have the stands right next to the performance area and you can find yourself having a conversation with the crowd while the performance actually takes place.

Stage

Stages are generally raised above the audience so that they can see you better and sometimes to help the sound travel further. Of course, this can sometimes lead to stage fright for some people as they realise exactly how many others they are performing in front of, thus leading to nerves and on a rare occasion they will actually freeze.

In order to counter that, some theatres make the lights that they shine on their actors extremely bright, so that not only is it clear to the audience what is happening on stage, but also to blind the actor so that they can't really tell whether the auditorium is full or empty, as this can sometimes help them overcome their fears.

Bandshell

Often when people are playing musical instruments outside they will do so under cover. It's always very pleasant to listen to live music on a summer's day, however, if it's raining then it can affect the instruments which can cause serious problems to the quality of the music and therefore the performance. They also keep the musicians cool at moments which can be particularly stressful.

As you can see there are plenty of places and arenas in which we can perform, and which can all have different impacts on us when we are doing our thing. Where would you like to perform next?
