Weddings Beware!

At some point in our lives almost all of us will be married and while the day is one of the highlights of our lives it can be very expensive as unscrupulous suppliers try to overcharge you for the most basic of services. Here are a few to watch out for.

Venue

While it's important to get the venue that you want, it is sometimes just as important to remember who is in charge. Admittedly there are only so many h available to you, but just because you have limited choice doesn't mean you should meekly accept whatever is demanded.

For example, if a marque is really what you want - and for many it is, and for good reason because they can be beautiful and practical - then find out what the actual hire and creation of one would be from a third party before blindly accepting whatever a hotel suggests the price should be.

Likewise, the hotel should show enough self-awareness to realise that they aren't the centre of the day and that it's the married couple's special day. Therefore they need to show a reasonable degree of flexibility to give as much effort to creating the day you want, not the day that suits them best.

Dinner

Dinner is one of the areas where your venue provider will really ratchet up the price, so be careful about this. Have a look around and find out what they are charging for other events, such as a Christmas meal, for example, as well as even what they are charging for a meal at their restaurant. Quite often you will be shocked at the similarity in menu and the disparity in price. Remember: just because you are getting married doesn't mean you should pay overpay for basic items.

Also, watch out for what "extras" cost. You'll probably be given a drinks package, which will satisfy some, however, it won't necessarily cover everything. How much is a jug of orange juice going to cost, for example, or a bottle of mineral water? Is the table plan included and do they provide a stand for the cake and a knife.

As you can see - and quite possibly already know - planning a wedding can be extremely stressful event and this is often not helped by venues trying to impose ridiculous margins on the happy couple. Be aware of what you are getting and question just how reasonable the price of what they are providing is - and not in the context of what the competition is doing.
