Bikram yoga studios teach the yoga discipline started by Bikram Choudury. His special technique is defined by a unique portfolio of 26 postures, some traditional, others new. The portfolio also incorporates two separate breathing exercises. These postures and breathing exercises have been carefully designed to provide individuals with a manageable way to counter the stresses that come with a busy modern lifestyle. The portfolio increases muscle strength and expands body elasticity.

The hot method has benefits for the mind, spirit and body. For the mind, the technique helps individuals with meditation, clarity of thought as well as focus and concentration. For the spirit, the technique helps individuals balance the chakras and prioritize their personal goals. Although the advantages for mind and spirit are substantial, the technique is perhaps best known for its advantages for body health.

For the body, the technique helps control cholesterol content in the blood; pump oxygen and nutrients through the body; flush toxins and revitalize the lymphatic system; strengthen immunity; better balance endocrine efficiency; improve spine flexibility; expand lung capacity as well as strengthen the heart, bones and muscles.

For example, one of the 26 poses highlighted by the technique is the half moon (hands-feet) pose. This stance has major health benefits. It re-energizes vital organs like the spleen, liver, pancreas and kidneys; it helps improve posture, lower back pain, bronchial distress; it helps correct scoliotic deformities, tennis elbow and stiff shoulders; it improves circulation, particularly in the legs; it increases flexibility of the spine, sciatic nerves, as well as leg tendons and ligaments; and, finally, the pose strengthens the hips, abdomen, buttock and thighs.

Similarly, the eagle pose also has major health benefits. It relieves neck and shoulder tension; boosts sexual vigor; improves flexibility of all twelve major body; and, finally, the pose strengthens arms, abdomen and legs. The two breathing exercises help to expand both the lungs to their full natural capacity; increase circulation throughout the body; counter the adverse affects of asthma, emphysema and other breathing conditions; helps improve blood pressure; and, finally, exercises the entire nerve, respiration and circulation systems.

A full 90 minute yoga class is available on DVD. The exercises are physically demanding and mentally challenging. The pricing for classes at the studio is very affordable with several rate options available extending for short periods as well as some that extend entitlements over a period of six months or more.

A large number of separate yoga schools exist. Some are Hatha, Ashtanga Vinyasa, Raja (meditation), Bhakti (devotion), Karma (action), Jnana (knowledge), Kriya and Kundalini. The Bikram school is focused on an original and testing series of poses, stances and movements that are largely inspired by Hatha.

To sum up, Bikram yoga has a carefully designed portfolio of two breathing exercises and twenty-six challenging postures. Each class lasts 1.5 hours and is conducted in a dynamic, testing, but fun way. The room is heated to 40 degrees C so as to warm muscles, reducing the potential for injury and increasing the elasticity of body tissues.
