Boston, one of the oldest cities in the US and is the capital and biggest city of Massachusetts. The most expansive city in the New England area, Boston is the economic and cultural heart of the territory and is occasionally called the unofficial Capital of New England. In 2007, Boston city had a population of 608,352, ranking it as the 21st largest in the nation.

Boston is the anchor of a largely metropolitan section known as Greater Boston, with a population of 4.5 million people and the tenth biggest metropolitan region in the country. Greater Boston as a substitute area includes portions of Maine, New Hampshire and Rhode Island; it has 7.5 million people, ranking it as the fifth-largest Combined Statistical Area of the US.

Puritan colonists from England conceived the city in 1630, on the Shawmut Peninsula. At Boston many important incidents took place during the American Revolution like the Boston Massacre and the Boston Tea Party in the late 18th century. Many initial battles of the American Revolution like the Battle of Bunker Hill and the Siege of Boston happened in the city and encompassing regions.

After municipal seizure and land reclamation, Boston has extended beyond the peninsula. After America became independent, Boston attained a significant shipping port and manufacturing hub and its valuable history attracts 16.3 million tourists each year. The city has been the site of many firsts, such as America's first public school, Boston Latin School opened in 1635, first college, Harvard College opened in 1636, at Cambridge, a neighbor and the first subway system in the US.

Due to numerous colleges and universities in the city and near about areas, Boston is considered the heart of higher education and a core for medicine. Economy of the city is based on electronics, engineering, finance, research and technology probably on biotechnology. Boston stands on top in the US in jobs per sq mile ahead of New York City and Washington, D.C. The city has been feeling restoration and is the most expensive to live in the US, though it stands high on world livability rankings.

The Puritans belonging to the Massachusetts Bay Colony are few times puzzled with the Pilgrims, who discovered Plymouth Colony 10 years prior to what currently is Plymouth County, Bristol County and Barnstable County, Massachusetts. These two groups varies in religious customs, are historically exclusive. These divided colonies were not merged till the creation of the Province of Massachusetts Bay in 1691.
