If you are working a missing person or teenage run away case a forensic examination of the missing persons computer can recover vital evidence and assist you in locating that person. Many times investigators in these kinds of cases will overlook forensics believing that it's too expensive or the process is only available to law enforcement but both of these statements are simply untrue. Computer forensics is available to private citizens through the services of private investigators that have the tools and experience to perform such examinations and return a report of the data recovered. This report and the information contained can be used first to assist in locating the missing person and if necessary as evidence in court if there is a criminal case involving an abduction.
Computer forensics can recover evidence in cases of divorce, child custody, employee termination or even locating a missing person or teen run away.
A Forensic Examination Can Recover:
- Deleted Emails - Deleted Images - Deleted Files - Chat Logs (Yahoo, MSN, AOL) - Deleted Documents - Browser History
As you can see of this data is invaluable in the case of a missing persons or teenage runaway investigation.
As always in cases of this type your first step should be to call 911 immediately and make a police report. Tell the police the whole truth about the situation without leaving out the slightest detail. Make all of the evidence in the case available to them for forensic examinations including cell phones , computers, lap tops and GPS units. However if the police are not examining these devices forensically you have the right to retain the services of a private investigator to conduct these forensic examinations for you.
Be sure the investigator you hire is experienced in computer and cell phone forensics, make sure they are familiar with email tracing techniques and Internet investigations. Internet investigations and email tracing can be used to pin point a persons exact location as they open an email or even reveal where they where when sending an email or even just posting an image on Twitter. These are all resources that should be taken advantage of until they are thoroughly exhausted.
