I googled "writing an effective sales copy" today and got 5,150,000 results! Realizing that most tips mostly just elaborate on the basics, I decided that for today's post, I'll share 4 great tips on writing an effective sales copy that I learned from the Copywriter's Guild Course.
It's a great course, and while these tips are very simple, I believe they sum up all the "secrets" in sales copywriting. I hope these tips help you the next time you write a sales copy!
1. Start with the prospect; not the product.
We all know this. But why do we still see sales copies that immediately talk about the product or service?
Always, always start with your prospect - talk to them in your opening line. Don't just go ahead and pitch the product.
Ever heard of the "so what" test?
When you're done writing, review what you have written and put your copy to the test by asking, "so what?" or "who cares?". This way you can "fix" your copy and elaborate.
2. Talk to the prospects' needs and desires.
Again, this is something that we already know. Benefits sell, and not features right?
So when writing an effective sales copy, always put yourself in the shoes of your prospect and ask: "what's in it for me?"
Learn a little bit about the basic human motivators. Tell them exactly what's in it for them by writing copy that evokes a specific emotion.
3. Build a bridge from your prospect to your product.
Now that you've "talked" to your market, hone in on what your product can do to answer their needs. This is the time to show off!
Do you offer the lowest price, the fastest delivery, the best guarantee, etc? Back up what you say. When writing an effective sales copy, articulate the benefits and back up what you say.
4. Ask for the sale.
Dont' get squeamish! After "talking" to your prospect with your copy, ask for the sale!
Never assume that your prospect will know what to do next. Tell them what you want them to do next -- do you want them to buy now, call, complete an order form, sign up for your newsletter or join your forum? Go ahead and tell them so!
Keep these 4 things in mind every time you write sales copies. If you really think about it, these are the ONLY things you need to learn by heart if your purpose is to sell!
