If you're familiar with Greek mythology, you will probably remember how gods and goddesses, Titans, and mortals, battle it out for power. Remember how Titans and mortals often defy the gods and goddesses for a glimpse and taste of that almighty power vested upon those seated at Mt. Olympus?

Which brings me to the battle of our own modern-day Titans - Google and Facebook. Who is powerful enough to be among the gods?

Much has been said already and I know that the Internet is already saturated with a lot of discussion over who's really lording it over in the social network scene. In my opinion, it is still Google. Its encompassing reach especially in the search engine scenario is something that Facebook is wanting. This is notwithstanding the fact that Facebook has teamed up with Microsoft's Bing, integrating the Facebook "likes" into search results late last year. This integration did not really go into Bing's actual algorithm, which means that a Facebook "like" has no effect on Bing's search rankings at all. It was just some sort of social validation tool. Social proof as we called it.

With the advent of Google's +1 button, Google is now making its search engine more social with this feature similar to the Facebook "like." Read the previous article here. This move is really an acknowledgment on the part of Google that Facebook is up and arms for global domination and the former will not take it lightly just sitting down.

And, the best thing about Google +1 is that, unlike the Facebook-Bing integration, Google will eventually integrate its +1 into the search algorithm itself so human votes will have an impact on search ranking.

"When someone recommends something, that's a pretty good indicator of quality," said Matt Cutts, Google's principle engineer for search in Advertising Age. "We are strongly looking at using this in our rankings."

"Injecting a social layer into the algorithmic search is key to relevance," said Dave Karnstedt, CEO of Efficient Frontier, in the same article. "Do a search on 'DVD player' today now you will see 35,000 results in less than 3 milliseconds. It's meaningless, but if you can sort through those by people who have given a social signal and those rise to the top, I think that can only enhance the user experience."

So, the question is: will Google +1 enhance the user experience more than the Facebook "like?"
