I am very much inspired by a book that I am currently reading.
"Out of the Box for Life: Being Free Is Just A Choice" written by Warren Berland, PH.D. talks about how we could all get out of the prison walls that we ourselves set up.
In the chapter "Getting Out of the Box," the author presented various stories of how certain people overcame their own boxed life. According to Berland, "any and all limiting beliefs are a sign of being in the box. When we experience these beliefs, we feel trapped in an image of ourselves as unworthy and unable to do anything about our situation. But in truth, we are simply looking at ourselves, as well as others, through a dark lens that colors everything we see, think, and feel. There is truly no way out of this difficulty until we realize what we are doing. Once we do, we can correct our mistaken perceptions and respond more appropriately to any situation." Powerless to change.
I think this is the thing that really makes us live a life inside the box. But in an exercise that I will be sharing with you, you will realize that being in the box is a thing of the past if you only follow these important steps:
Step 1: Recognize that you're in the box. The acknowledgment that we are really stuck, constricted, limited, and in pain is the first sign of moving on.
Step 2: Put the issue aside. I agree with the author that it is very difficult to gain clarity and objectivity when we are in the middle of an upset. We should focus on the issue at hand by distancing ourselves from the problem. Taking a step back and see things from an outsider's perspective.
Step 3: Ask and answer questions to get out of the box.
If I were out of the box right now, what would I be experiencing? How would I be feeling? What would I be doing? What would I be thinking?
Step 4: Now that you are out of the box, look at the issue that was troubling you. Can you see the difference? Simple.
Objectivity.
Because only when we are outside looking in, literally out of the box, that we see things as they really are.
