When someone speaks about viral marketing or viral advertising they are referring to marketing techniques that use a variety of social networks or similar vehicles to increase product awareness and sales. In effect, modern methods of promotion on the Internet are really just updated versions of old fashioned word of mouth advertising. However, the wide variety of methods available, combined with the huge amount of activity on the Internet, make this form of advertising extremely powerful.
Viral Marketing can be a very effective and inexpensive way to create exponential growth and quickly increase visibility. If implemented properly, a viral advertising campaign can reach tremendous numbers of potential customers at a low cost and in a short period of time. As the name implies, it relies on spreading information among people who interact with each other.
The main idea behind viral marketing is to deliver a message about your particular campaign to a group of individuals who will pass the message on to other people. In other words, the main desire is to have his promotion become contagious and be spread to others from those who originally came in contact with it. In this way, an advertiser can reach of a greater number of prospects without bearing the costs associated with reaching each one of those people individually.
This process begins by identifying people who have a high social networking potential. These are people who frequent certain areas of the Internet where available information is commonly shared with others who gather there. The most basic examples would be social networking sites like Twitter or FaceBook. When a message that people find interesting is posted to these networks, they are likely to share it with others in the network.
Ideally, the second set of people who receive the information will pass it on to others who may possibly pass it on again. When this happens, a large number of potential customers will see a message that was introduced to a relatively small portion of the population of a network. It is also possible that an advertising message of great interest could be passed to another network, increasing the viral effect even further.
Most commonly, viral advertising is introduced in the form of text messages at social networking sites such as MySpace, Digg or Twitter. In some cases the same effect can be gained by simple emails that request the receiver to forward the message on to others. However, some of the advertising campaigns have become very sophisticated and take the form of videos, interactive games or software applications.
The key to an effective viral campaign of any sort is to distribute an idea that is intriguing enough to get consumers to refer it to others that they feel may also be interested in that particular message. Trying to sell items that are old or very common is rarely effective in viral marketing. A product that is new or unusual will have a greater chance of being noticed and referred by people in that network to others. Products or services that are too common are simply ignored.
Like any other form of Internet marketing, viral advertising must be used with sophistication. If presented well, it can significantly increase traffic to your web site by being transferred from computer to computer. It must be used carefully, because, just like traditional word of mouth advertising, if it is done poorly it can alienate customers and affect the reputation of a brand.
