Despite what many aspiring web-based students believe, earning a degree online is not easy. It presents a number of challenges that can derail your education before it truly starts. From time considerations and organization to networking and motivation to get things done, you're the only person who can determine your success.

In this article, we'll prepare you for the road ahead by revealing six obstacles you'll face when pursuing an online degree (or diploma, certification, etc.). Along the way, we'll offer suggestions for overcoming the hurdles, and receiving the education you desire.

#1 - Completing Assignments And Projects On Time

Even students who attend traditional colleges have difficulty completing their work on time. But when you have the flexibility to do the work at home, without the supervision of your instructors or pressure from your peers, getting things done can be a serious problem. Courses taken online require a high level of discipline. You'll be forced to choose between working on assignments and participating in activities you enjoy. The temptation to set work aside is substantial.

Commit to avoiding procrastination before you enroll. A lot of new students also find it helpful to create a schedule that details when they should study and work on assignments.

#2 - A Place To Work

If you don't designate a place at which you intend to work on your business online degree, you'll end up compromising your study environment. You may find yourself working at the kitchen table while your family talks around you. Or, you might be lured to the couch where others are watching television.

You'll need a quiet atmosphere so you can concentrate on your studies. Reserve a space in your home or apartment, and use it exclusively for your coursework.

#3 - Inspiration And Motivation

Inspiration and motivation are common stumbling blocks for online learners. There will be times when you'll want to do anything but study. Your friends, family, and countless activities will tempt you to set your classwork aside. It is during those times that you'll need motivation to continue working.

Realize upfront that earning an online degree is no easier than earning a degree from a conventional school. In many ways, it's more difficult since the discipline needed is far greater. A lot of online students - especially adults - keep photos of their families near their study spaces. The photos remind them of the reasons they're working so hard.

#4 - Organization

Staying organized is one of the keys to successfully completing your online education. If you approach your coursework haphazardly, you'll find that things can quickly spiral out of control. That can make completing assignments and studying for tests more difficult than necessary.

Create a calendar to manage deadlines for your class assignments, group projects, and exams. Create folders in your email program to manage emails exchanged with your instructors and peers. Staying on top of these details will help to reduce your workload, and thereby reduce your stress.

#5 - Interaction With Peers And Instructors

Taking online courses can make you feel isolated from others in your class. There are few, if any, opportunities to enjoy face-to-face interaction with fellow students and instructors. Unfortunately, many web-based students never make an effort to reach out to them.

Connecting with those in your classes - both students and instructors - not only minimizes feelings of isolation, but can also pay dividends down the road. The connections you make can help you to achieve your professional goals.

Call, email, or chat with your peers online. If they live nearby, schedule get-togethers and meet them in person. Doing so will make earning your online degree a more rewarding experience.

#6 - Getting Credit For Past Courses

This is an area of online learning that is often neglected. If you have attended college in the past, and are returning to complete your degree, make sure you receive all of the credit you're due. Send past transcripts to your new school, and speak personally with an advisor. Even if you're denied credit for some of your classes at first, make a compelling case in your favor. Your online college may concede, allowing you to earn your degree more quickly.

The most important thing to remember is that pursuing an online education is just as challenging as attending a traditional school. Avoid the obstacles above to earn your degree with as few problems as possible.
