Childhood obesity is one of the great American health tragedies of this century. Adults who suffer from serious health related issues caused by obesity can often trace their condition to eating patterns developed during the early stages of childhood and adolescents. Sadly, these negative eating patterns could be controlled by adult supervision. Children, however, are forced to eat what is given to them, without consideration for the future when they will live with emotional problems and negative health issues like diabetes. Prevention and cure, however, is now available through implementation of the new Glycemic Index Health Plan.

Fact: overweight children are much more likely to become overweight adults unless they adopt and maintain healthier patterns of eating and exercise. The problem of childhood obesity in America has grown considerably in recent years. Between 16 and 33 percent of children and adolescents are obese. This is a shame and we need to change their path through the implementation of a serious glycemic health plan.

We often see an obese child also suffering from emotional problems. Teens with weight problems are taunted, and tend to have much lower self-esteem. Surely they are less popular with their peers. Depression, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorders occur as a result.

Generally speaking, obesity becomes a lifelong issue; as with adults who take diet pills or follow the latest fad diet. If and when they reach their goal and go back to old habits of eating, exercise no longer is a requirement. Therefore, it is important that they learn to eat and enjoy healthy foods in moderate amounts and do a planned exercise regularly... even if it's a forced one-mile a day walk.

Unlike adults, children must eat what is set before them. They are helpless to the choices of three meals a day. Current studies have confirmed that dinner time is disappearing from the family unity. Meals are caught on the fly with little or no preparation.

As I wait in the checkout line with my groceries, I often study the mom in front of me as she puts chips, cookies, pop-tarts, frozen pancakes and fully prepared dinners on the belt - then I glance at the two children with her.

Parents of obese children can improve their child's self-esteem by studying and actually implementing the Glycemic Index plan while their offspring are young. They will thus spare them the humiliation of name-calling while improving their self-esteem, and helping them instead of nagging them about their weight problem, which they caused themselves.

E.B. Smith has done extensive studies in the new science of Glycemic Index weight control and has concluded that child obesity usually leads to adult obesity. It can, however, be changed via the home meal-planner. Smith is offering a free online eBook course on the Glycemic Health Plan to those visiting her web site at: http://www.glycemichealthnews.com
